Kitsune Noir’s Desktop Wallpaper Project offers a huge variety of digital wallpaper in all sizes created by artists, illustrators, and designers. I browsed the entire collection and downloaded a nice set of favorites. Between the Desktop Wallpaper Project and Poolga, I’ll never have boring wallpapers ever again.

“Shroom Harvest” by APAK

I think this piece by APAK has a perfect Autumn feel. The gouache on wood original is for sale from Tinlark Gallery.

Thanksgiving is three days away. It’s only a mini break for me (driving home the day before, driving back the day after) but end of the semester and Winter Break is coming up in just a couple weeks. I’m really looking forward to getting away from college for a bit and enjoying some time at home.

"How long were the stretches of toilsome tacking back and forth, of being blocked, of being thrown..."

“How long were the stretches of toilsome tacking back and forth, of being blocked, of being thrown back again and again. I was always fascinated with polaroids when I was a kid. I thought about buying my own polaroid camera, but another novelty is the last thing I need. At only 99¢ this is a nice compromise.
The APAK team has been hard at work with lots of new goodies in their etsy shop including a new set of three limited edition ”Space Garden” prints.

I love APAK’s artwork for its adorable style, but most of all, for the characters and narratives living within their imaginative worlds.

“An American tourist onboard a camel” from the LIFE...

“An American tourist onboard a camel” from the LIFE Photo Archive

Today the world’s most iconic cat of pop culture turns 35. I grew up in love with Sanrio’s other characters (such as Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, Pochocco, etc.) more than Hello Kitty herself, but these days I have my share of Kitty bling too. It’s hard not to adore a character that’s continued to promote values of sharing and friendship for over three decades.

“Zombie Cuisine” by Patrick Moberg

If Tokyobling’s spectacular photos and candid commentary on Japanese culture don’t make you fall at least a little bit in love with Japan, then I don’t know what will.

Hopefully I’ll have the chance to spend some time in Japan someday. I recently attended a presentation on campus from JET (Japanese Exchange and Teaching programme) and it’s something I’d love to consider doing after graduation. For now, I’ll just enjoy the photos.

“Picasso Drawing With Light” from LIFE Photo...

“Picasso Drawing With Light” from LIFE Photo Archive

I water colored simple ink drawings of some of the tools I use most in art (pen, pencil, mechanical pencil, brushes, etc.) They came out pretty nice despite me prepping the files in a hurry to take advantage of a sale. Moo just added some new features to their MiniCards, and although I ordered mine before the changes, I at least got one of the rad new boxes they just began packing them in.

A couple more views of my cards are up on flickr.
I’m hooked on browsing the LIFE photo archive. As of last year Google began hosting over ten million images from the LIFE archives, most of which have never been published. Everything from fashion to world events, sports to animals. There’s pretty much anything you can imagine from 1750’s through present day. I’m finding it to be a great source for inspiration and reference material (although keeping in mind that LIFE’s copyrighted images are for personal non-commercial use only).

I think each week I’ll post up at least one favorite image I’ve come across. This first week’s image, photographed by Stan Wayman in 1963, I found while browsing photos tagged under 1960’s.

"I have sometimes heard painters say that they paint “for themselves”; but I think they..."

“I have sometimes heard painters say that they paint “for themselves”; but I think they would soon have painted their fill if they lived on a desert island.
